India Australia Test Series: Battle Between No.1 Test Teams? Not Quite…

by Amateur Statistician

That India Australia Test series always had an edge about them is not being questioned. But that this particular series can actually be billed as the battle between no.1s is rather wrong.
According to the ICC release, only Australia has the opportunity to move up or down. That is because it is fourth in the ICC Test rankings, with the possibility of moving up the rankings if it manages to win the series. India, on the other hand, will remain the no.1 Test team irrespective of how the series pans out.

India have the opportunity to go up 130 points if they win the series by a 2-0 margin from their present 127 points. If they lose both Tests, their position still remains unaffected, standing on 122 points, three points clear of South Africa.
Australia have it all to gain, currently a point down behind England on 113 points and in the fourth position. Should they win the series by 2-0, Australia will move into third position with 118 points while a 1-0 victory will give them 117 points, ahead of Sri Lanka by two points.
But should Australia lose by a 1-0 margin or a 2-0 margin, Australia will drop in the points table to 111 points and 110 points, although it would not affect their rankings.
